Two Men Granted Bail in Separate Incidents

    Published on

In two unrelated cases that came before the courts this week, two men have been granted bail after being charged with separate offences, bringing renewed attention to the judicial process and the principle of presumed innocence.

The first case involved 28-year-old Michael Peters of East Bank Demerara, who was arrested last week following an altercation at a popular entertainment spot. Peters was charged with causing grievous bodily harm after allegedly striking another patron during a dispute. He appeared before Magistrate Alicia Roberts at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning. Peters’ attorney argued that his client had no previous convictions and posed no flight risk. After considering the submissions, Magistrate Roberts granted bail in the sum of $150,000, with strict conditions that Peters report to the police station weekly and refrain from contacting the alleged victim. The case has been adjourned to June 16, 2025.

In the second incident, 35-year-old Samuel James of Berbice was brought before the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court on charges of unlawful possession of property. Police allege that James was found in possession of several items suspected to be stolen during a recent spate of burglaries in the area. James, who maintains his innocence, was represented by counsel who highlighted his longstanding ties to the community and lack of prior criminal record. The magistrate set bail at $100,000 and ordered James to surrender his passport and remain within the jurisdiction until the matter is resolved. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 20, 2025.

Both men have denied the allegations and are expected to vigorously defend themselves as their cases progress. The granting of bail in these matters reflects the court’s ongoing commitment to balancing the rights of the accused with the interests of public safety. Legal observers note that these cases underscore the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
