Two men appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday, charged with the murder of Leon Alexander Bartrum at the busy intersection of Croal and Longden Streets. The accused, Kennard Persaud, known as “Rattie,†and Rickey Andrews, both residents of Georgetown, were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The incident, which occurred on the night of March 6, 2025, reportedly began as an altercation among acquaintances. According to the prosecution, Persaud and Andrews were standing at the street corner when Bartrum approached, leading to a heated argument. During the confrontation, Persaud allegedly drew a cutlass from his electric bike and delivered several chops to Bartrum’s head and body. Bartrum, who was also armed with a cutlass, retaliated and wounded Persaud. Andrews is accused of joining the fray, striking Bartrum several times with a piece of wood.
After the attack, Bartrum managed to walk to the corner of Charlotte Street and Avenue of the Republic, where he collapsed. He was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and admitted in serious condition. Persaud was initially charged with attempted murder, but after Bartrum succumbed to his injuries on April 25, the charge was upgraded to murder and Andrews was arrested.
During police interviews, both men reportedly admitted to their roles in the incident. However, in court, Persaud took full responsibility for the attack, insisting that Andrews was not involved in the violence, while Andrews maintained his innocence and claimed he only tried to intervene.
Despite their statements, Magistrate Fabayo Azore remanded both men to prison. The case has been adjourned to June 13, 2025, as the court awaits the post-mortem results and further advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions. The matter continues to draw public attention as the investigation proceeds.
