Taxi Driver Sentenced to One Year in Prison for Sexual Activity with Minor

A 67-year-old taxi driver has been handed a one-year prison sentence after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a minor, following proceedings at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Gregory Gordon, also known as “Isiah,” of Duncan Street, Newtown, Kitty, was convicted for touching a young girl’s private parts between January and March 2023 at a residence in Georgetown. The verdict was delivered by Magistrate Annette Singh, who presided over the case.

During the sentencing hearing, Gordon’s attorney pleaded for leniency, describing his client as shocked by the outcome and requesting the minimum sentence. Despite these appeals, Magistrate Singh imposed a custodial sentence, citing the seriousness of the offence. Gordon was initially charged under the Sexual Offences Act of 2010, which criminalizes any sexual activity or incitement involving a child under 16, regardless of whether penetration occurred.

The case has had a significant impact on the young victim, who is currently receiving counselling support. Prior to sentencing, Gordon had been released on $200,000 bail, with strict court orders prohibiting him from contacting the victim or coming within 300 feet of her.

The police prosecutor did not object to bail at the time it was granted but requested that these protective conditions remain in place. The court’s decision underscores the legal system’s commitment to addressing offences against minors and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of minors and the responsibilities of those in positions of trust, such as taxi drivers. Authorities continue to encourage victims of such crimes to come forward, assuring them of support and a thorough investigation into their cases.
