A 27-year-old taxi driver was apprehended at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport on Monday after authorities discovered over a kilogram of marijuana concealed in pet food and snack packaging.
The suspect, identified as Dequan Charles of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was intercepted by police officers around 9:40 a.m. at the Jag’s Aviation Hangar. According to a police statement, Charles was in possession of two boxes of Triskits crackers, a bag of Purina Dog Chow, and a bag of bird seeds. Upon inspection, officers uncovered three transparent plastic parcels and two Ziploc bags labeled “Snowman†and “Lemonade,†all containing cannabis.
The marijuana, which included leaves, seeds, and stems, weighed approximately 2.90 pounds (1.315 kilograms). Charles reportedly told police that an individual named “Akeem” had given him the packages with instructions to send them on a flight bound for Kamarang in Region Seven.
Following his arrest, Charles was taken to the Narcotics Branch at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Georgetown. Investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to determine the full extent of the trafficking operation.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb drug trafficking through Guyana’s airports. The Eugene F. Correia International Airport has seen similar cases in recent months as authorities intensify security measures to combat narcotics smuggling.
