A senior officer of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has been released on $100,000 station bail after being involved in a fatal road accident in Wismar, Linden, that claimed the life of a young motorcyclist.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday along Burnham Drive. The deceased, 23-year-old Kellon Sumner of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, was riding his motorcycle when he collided with a car driven by 48-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Courtney Mendonca. According to police reports, Mendonca was attempting a right turn when Sumner’s motorcycle struck the front left side of the vehicle. Sumner, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown onto the roadway and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Both the car and the motorcycle have been impounded for inspection as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities also conducted two breathalyser tests on Lieutenant Colonel Mendonca, which showed blood alcohol content levels of 0.045 and 0.041, both above the legal limit of 0.035.
The body of the deceased is currently at the Linden Senior Citizens Association Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident continues, with Mendonca out on station bail as police gather further evidence. The case has sparked renewed calls for road safety and responsible driving, especially among public officials.
