Aaron Willis, a 27-year-old prison officer attached to the Lusignan Prison, has been remanded to custody after being charged with multiple drug-related offenses. The charges include introducing prohibited items into the prison and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Willis, who resides at Lot 612 Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara, was arrested by officers from the Vigilance Police Station. He appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following his court appearance, Willis was remanded to prison, and the matter has been adjourned until May 19, 2025. The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address drug smuggling and other illegal activities within Guyana’s correctional facilities.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on contraband smuggling in prisons, emphasizing that anyone found guilty of such offenses will face strict legal consequences. This case serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining security and integrity within the nation’s prison system.
