A 24-year-old woman from Richmond Hill, Linden, was arrested in Port Kaituma, Region One, after police discovered a significant quantity of marijuana at a shop she operates. The arrest occurred on March 31, 2025, during an anti-crime patrol conducted by ranks from Regional Police Division #1.
The woman, identified as Daywantie Thackurdeen, was approached by police officers at Eight Miles Backdam in Port Kaituma after they received intelligence about possible illegal activities at the shop. When questioned about the ownership of the shop, Thackurdeen informed the officers that it belonged to a man known as “Wicked Tail,” who was reportedly in Georgetown. She admitted to being the shopkeeper and cooperated with the police.
Before the search began, Thackurdeen declared that she had illegal items in her possession. She led the officers to two bulky plastic bags hidden under the shop counter. The bags contained leaves, seeds, stems suspected to be cannabis, and compressed marijuana. Upon weighing the substance at the Port Kaituma Police Station, it amounted to 1.190 kilograms.
Thackurdeen remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to file charges against her for possession of narcotics for trafficking purposes. This arrest underscores law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to curb drug-related activities in Guyana’s remote regions.
