New Amsterdam, Guyana – Law enforcement officers conducted two successful raids in New Amsterdam, Berbice, Region Six, resulting in the seizure of over 3.5 kilograms of cannabis and the arrest of multiple suspects.

The first operation took place on Sunday morning at Mai Mai Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, during a routine police patrol. Officers intercepted a suspicious white and green motorcycle and questioned its occupants—a 48-year-old laborer known as “Coconut Man” and a 25-year-old security guard nicknamed “Bubble Gum.” Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered a plastic bag containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. The narcotics were weighed and totaled 1,129 grams. Both men were arrested and taken into custody pending charges.

In a separate raid on March 28 at Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, police acted on intelligence regarding suspected criminal activity. During the search of a residence, several bags containing cannabis were uncovered in various locations, including a garbage bin and a wheelbarrow under the house. One suspect attempted to flee with a bulky plastic bag but was apprehended. The total weight of the seized cannabis amounted to 2,397 grams (2.39 kg). A 21-year-old porter admitted ownership of the drugs, stating, “All the weed is me own.â€

Several individuals present at the house were detained, with some later released on bail while one remains in custody as investigations continue.

These operations highlight the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug-related activities in Berbice and ensure public safety. Authorities have pledged to remain vigilant as they work to dismantle illegal drug networks in the region.
