A 26-year-old police constable, Areyon Grannum, was arrested early Wednesday morning after officers discovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his vehicle during a routine anti-crime patrol in the Riverview, Ruimveldt area.

The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. when police on mobile patrol responded to reports from residents about a suspicious white Toyota Premio parked along a street. The car, bearing a trade plate, was occupied by Grannum, who is stationed at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) and was reportedly on sick leave at the time.

Upon questioning, Grannum told officers he was “liming” in the area and had recently purchased the vehicle. A search of his person revealed nothing illegal. However, a subsequent search of the car led to the discovery of a .32 Taurus pistol and a magazine loaded with 11 live rounds, hidden inside the driver’s side door panel.

When asked to produce a firearm licence, Grannum admitted he did not have one and claimed the weapon was for his personal protection. He was immediately cautioned, arrested, and transported to the Ruimveldt Police Station along with the vehicle. The firearm, ammunition, and vehicle were all lodged as evidence.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, as police work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the possession of the illegal weapon by a serving officer.
