In two separate cases heard at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, one man was granted bail while another was remanded to prison, both facing charges related to illegal possession of firearms.
The first defendant, 28-year-old Kevin Andrews of Sophia, appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm without being the holder of a firearm license. Police allege that on May 24, Andrews was found with a .38 revolver during a routine stop and search operation in the city. Andrews pleaded not guilty to the charge. His attorney argued that the firearm was not found in his direct possession and that Andrews had no previous convictions. After considering the submissions, Magistrate Daly granted Andrews bail in the sum of $150,000. The matter was adjourned to June 20 for statements.
In a separate case, 35-year-old Mark Peters of Albouystown was remanded to prison after being charged with possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and matching ammunition. According to the prosecution, Peters was apprehended during a targeted operation at his residence, where the weapon and ammunition were discovered hidden inside a closet. Peters denied the allegations, but the prosecution objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offense and the prevalence of gun-related crimes in the area. Magistrate Daly upheld the objection and ordered that Peters remain in custody until his next court appearance on June 22.
These cases underscore the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address the illegal possession and trafficking of firearms in the country. Police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities as they continue their crackdown on illegal weapons.
