A New Amsterdam (NA) man, Donald Sheriff, is set to be sentenced for manslaughter on March 4, 2025, at the Berbice High Court. Sheriff, who was originally charged with the murder of Keron Nicholson, a 33-year-old labourer, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in October 2024.
The incident occurred in March 2020 when Sheriff and Nicholson, who were known to each other, engaged in a heated argument that escalated into a violent altercation. Sheriff attacked Nicholson with a piece of wood, striking him in the head and continuing to assault him after he fell to the ground.
Nicholson succumbed to his injuries on March 18, 2020, at the Georgetown Public Hospital, ten days after the attack. Sheriff initially went into hiding but was apprehended in May 2020 at Stone Creek Backdam, Mahdia.
The case has drawn attention to the issue of violent crime in New Amsterdam and the broader Berbice region. It also highlights the legal system’s approach to cases where murder charges are reduced to manslaughter.
As the sentencing date approaches, legal observers and the community await the court’s decision. The outcome may have implications for similar cases in Guyana, potentially influencing future prosecutions and sentencing guidelines for manslaughter charges.
The court is expected to consider various factors in determining the sentence, including the circumstances of the crime, Sheriff’s background, and any mitigating or aggravating factors presented during the trial.
