Samuel Daniels, a 63-year-old resident of Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, has pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of his reputed wife, Shalina Paul, also known as Saskia Pereira or Chandani. The plea was entered before Justice Nareshwar Harnanan at the High Court in Demerara on Tuesday.
The incident dates back to 2021 when Paul’s lifeless body was discovered at their Goedverwagting home following reports of a violent altercation between the couple. According to prosecutor Abiola Lowe, the confrontation stemmed from a dispute over $3,000. Daniels, who was 59 at the time of the crime, reportedly attacked his wife during the argument.
Initially charged with murder, Daniels opted to plead guilty to manslaughter, acknowledging responsibility for his actions without admitting premeditation. The court is expected to deliberate on sentencing in the coming days.
This case sheds light on the tragic consequences of domestic disputes and the need for greater intervention to prevent such incidents. It also underscores the judicial system’s role in addressing cases of domestic violence while balancing considerations of justice and accountability.
