A man was shot and killed by police on Monday evening during an attempted armed robbery at the bustling intersection of Camp and Quamina Streets in Georgetown.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the incident unfolded around 7:00 p.m. when officers on patrol responded to reports of a robbery in progress. Upon arrival, police observed four men actively robbing Shurlan Critchlow, a 43-year-old security guard, in plain view of bystanders.

As officers approached, the suspects scattered in different directions. During the pursuit, one suspect drew a firearm and pointed it at an officer. In response, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect, who then fled briefly before collapsing on Quamina Street.

Police recovered a 9mm Ruger pistol with three rounds of ammunition next to the injured man, later identified as Orandy Samuel. He was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. The fatal wound was to the left side of his face.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over police use of force and the ongoing threat of armed robberies in Georgetown. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and continue to search for the remaining suspects.
