A man has been formally charged with assaulting a woman and illegal possession of a firearm following an incident in Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice. Navindra Singh, the accused, appeared before the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
The charges stem from a domestic violence report filed by Melinda Richardson, who alleged that Singh had threatened her during an altercation. Acting on her complaint, police located Singh near a supermarket on Super Value Street and arrested him for using threatening language.
During the arrest, officers conducted a search and discovered a black .38 revolver loaded with five live rounds of ammunition concealed in Singh’s pants waist. Further searches at his residence revealed additional ammunition, including three live 12-gauge cartridges stored in his refrigerator and twelve live rounds of .38 caliber ammunition hidden in a cupboard.
Singh was cautioned and admitted ownership of the firearm and ammunition. He was subsequently charged with illegal possession under the Firearms Act and assault-related offenses.
The court denied bail due to the seriousness of the charges, and Singh remains in custody as investigations continue. This case underscores ongoing concerns about domestic violence and illegal firearms possession in Guyana, prompting calls for stricter enforcement measures to address these issues effectively.
