Lusignan, Guyana – A tragic accident on Friday claimed the life of 54-year-old Mohandai Persaud, who was crushed by a truck while attempting to cross the Lusignan public road on the East Coast of Demerara. The incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns about pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas.
According to police reports, the accident occurred around midday when Persaud tried to cross the road from north to south. At the time, Motor Lorry #GAC 7708, driven by a 46-year-old man from Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, was stationary at a traffic light in the center lane of the northern carriageway. As the light turned green and vehicles began moving, Persaud reportedly walked into the path of the truck.
The truck collided with her, causing her to fall onto the road surface. Tragically, the vehicle’s left front wheel ran over her. Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist and transported Persaud to Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver revealed no traces of alcohol in his system. Nevertheless, he remains in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures and awareness campaigns aimed at protecting pedestrians. Residents have expressed concerns about the dangers posed by large vehicles in busy areas and have urged authorities to implement more effective traffic management solutions.
Persaud’s death serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by pedestrians and highlights the need for vigilance among both drivers and those navigating busy roadways. As investigations proceed, her family and community mourn the loss of a woman described as kind-hearted and hardworking.
