A police operation in the One Mile area of Wismar, Linden, turned fatal on Monday evening when a wanted man, 26-year-old Ronaldo Peters, was shot and killed by an officer. Peters, also known as “MMR,†was being sought for questioning in connection with the alleged rape of a minor under 16 years old, which reportedly occurred between December 1, 2024, and January 31, 2025.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 PM after officers received information that Peters was spotted at Shabba Bar in Wismar. A team of ranks from the Wismar Police Station, including a sergeant armed with a 9mm service pistol and another officer carrying a .38 service revolver, proceeded to the location in full uniform.
Upon arrival, Peters reportedly attempted to flee the scene by jumping over a nearby fence. The sergeant managed to pull him off the fence during the pursuit. It was during this altercation that the sergeant’s service pistol discharged, striking Peters in the lower right side of his abdomen. Peters was rushed to Mackenzie Public Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
A medical examination revealed a single gunshot wound on Peters’ abdomen. His body has since been transported to Pensioners Mortuary for a post-mortem examination as investigations into the incident continue.
The sergeant involved in the shooting is currently under close arrest and has been escorted to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU). Meanwhile, Guyana’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
Peters’ death has sparked discussions about police conduct during arrests and raised questions about whether proper protocols were followed during the operation. As authorities continue their investigation, this incident highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement practices and public safety concerns in Guyana.
