Three young men from Linden, Region 10, have been granted bail after being charged with armed robbery in a case that has drawn significant attention in the Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice community.
The accused—Muhamad Bakker, a 19-year-old welder of Powiese Crescent, Amelia’s Ward; Javon LaFleur, a 28-year-old labourer of Self Help, Amelia’s Ward; and Elijah Gilkes, a 19-year-old labourer of South Amelia’s Ward—were arrested on May 17, 2025. The charges stem from an alleged robbery under arms committed against a resident identified as Gang Xing at Central Amelia’s Ward, Mackenzie, Linden.
Appearing before the Linden Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, the trio faced the charge but were not required to enter a plea. Magistrate presiding over the matter granted each defendant bail in the amount of $350,000.
As part of their bail conditions, Bakker, LaFleur, and Gilkes are required to report to the Mackenzie Police Station twice each month. The case has been adjourned and is set to return to court on June 27, 2025.
The incident has prompted discussions in the community about public safety and the judicial process, as residents await further developments in the case.
