    Published on

A 25-year-old man from Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, has been charged with murder following a deadly altercation that left a local resident dead earlier this week.

Akesi Primo, also known as ‘Max’, appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court #2 on Friday, where he was formally charged with the murder of 48-year-old Derreck Sylvester Prostea. Primo was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The case has been adjourned until June 9, 2025.

The incident occurred around 18:45 on Wednesday evening along the Grove Public Road, EBD. According to preliminary police investigations, a misunderstanding between Primo and Prostea escalated into a violent confrontation. During the dispute, Primo allegedly stabbed Prostea in the right shoulder. Witnesses reported that Prostea collapsed at the scene.

Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting Prostea to the Diamond Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival by medical personnel.

Police acted promptly on information received, apprehending Primo in Kaneville shortly after the incident. He remains in custody as investigations continue.

The community has been left in shock by the sudden and violent nature of the incident, as residents grapple with the loss of a neighbor and the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation proceeds.
