    Published on

A linesman employed by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has been charged with assaulting a policewoman during a heated altercation in Georgetown. The accused, 42-year-old Mark Anthony, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 30, 2025, when Anthony confronted the policewoman over a traffic-related issue. Witnesses allege that the confrontation escalated, leading to Anthony physically assaulting the officer. The policewoman sustained minor injuries and immediately filed a report, prompting an investigation.

Anthony was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with assaulting a peace officer in the execution of her duties. During his court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison pending further hearings.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many calling for stricter measures to protect law enforcement officers from such incidents. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining respect for the rule of law.

The matter is scheduled for another hearing later this month as investigations continue.
