Georgetown, Guyana – A 37-year-old woman was granted bail after appearing before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to face charges of unlawful wounding. The defendant, Carlotta Jarad, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stemmed from an incident that reportedly occurred on March 17 at Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
Jarad was accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Claudette Dick during a confrontation. According to court proceedings, the two women are acquaintances, with Jarad alleging that Dick had a past relationship with her child’s father. The prosecution confirmed that the victim sustained minor injuries in the altercation and did not object to bail being granted.
Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty set bail at $20,000 but declined Jarad’s request for a reduction in the amount. During her plea for leniency, Jarad explained that she was unemployed and struggling financially after recently paying for land through a government housing program. “I’m really broke and don’t even have money to buy stuff for my kids,†she told the court. The magistrate advised her that her child’s father could assist with posting bail.
Jarad resides in Albouystown with her child’s father and has no prior convictions. The matter has been adjourned until April 16, when both parties are expected to return to court for further proceedings.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges of domestic disputes and interpersonal conflicts in communities across Guyana. As legal proceedings continue, authorities are urging individuals to seek peaceful resolutions and avoid escalating confrontations that could lead to criminal charges.
