In a recent crackdown on illegal drug possession in Guyana’s North West District, a shopkeeper from Triangle Backdam has been slapped with a substantial fine for trafficking marijuana. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts of local law enforcement to combat drug-related offenses in the region.
Chrislyn Alleyne, a 25-year-old resident of Triangle Backdam, found herself on the wrong side of the law when she was apprehended by a police officer from the Port Kaituma Police Station on March 28, 2025. The arrest led to Alleyne being charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, a serious offense under Guyanese law.
On April 3, 2025, Alleyne appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Baramita Police Station via a Zoom hearing to answer the charges. In a turn of events, the young shopkeeper opted to plead guilty to the offense. Consequently, Magistrate Singh imposed a fine of $261,900 on Alleyne, with the alternative of serving a six-month prison sentence if unable to pay.
This case comes amidst increased vigilance by the Guyanese police force in tackling drug-related crimes in the area. Just days after Alleyne’s arrest, on March 31, 2025, another woman was apprehended in a separate incident in the same region. Daywantie Thackurdeen, 24, from Richmond Hill, Linden, was found in possession of 1.190 kg of marijuana at her shop in Eight Miles Backdam, Port Kaituma.
These recent arrests underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the drug trade in Guyana’s remote areas. As authorities continue their efforts to maintain law and order, the cases serve as a stark reminder of the legal consequences awaiting those involved in narcotics trafficking.
The fines and potential jail time imposed in such cases reflect the seriousness with which the Guyanese judicial system treats drug-related offenses. As the fight against illegal drug trade persists, local residents and business owners are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement to keep their communities safe and drug-free.
