Fugitive Wanted for 2018 Toronto Attempted Murder Arrested in Guyana and Extradited to Canada

    Published on

Harry Rajkumar, a 46-year-old Toronto man wanted for a violent attack in 2018, has been arrested in Guyana and extradited to Canada to face multiple charges, including attempted murder. This case marks the first successful extradition from Guyana to Canada, highlighting a significant milestone in international law enforcement cooperation.

    The 2018 Incident

On November 23, 2018, Rajkumar allegedly entered a residence near McCowan Road and Eglinton Avenue East in Toronto, where he:

    • Assaulted a woman
    • Stabbed a 16-year-old female multiple times with an edged weapon
    • Fled the scene immediately after the attack

The teenage victim suffered significant stab and slash wounds to her neck, face, and shoulders, and was initially taken to hospital without vital signs. The woman sustained a serious but non-life-threatening head injury.

    Arrest and Extradition

After evading authorities for over six years:

    • Rajkumar was located and arrested by Guyanese authorities on December 20, 2024, based on information provided by Interpol
    • He waived his right to an extradition hearing and consented to return to Canada
    • On February 6, 2025, Rajkumar was extradited to Canada
    • He was formally arrested and charged in Toronto on February 7, 2025

    Charges

Rajkumar now faces several serious charges, including:

    • Attempted murder
    • Two counts of aggravated assault
    • Two counts of assault with a weapon
    • Two counts of failing to comply with recognizance
    • Disobeying a court order
    • Failing to appear in court

    Significance of the Extradition

This extradition is noteworthy for several reasons:

    1. It marks the first-ever extradition from Guyana to Canada
    2. It demonstrates the effectiveness of international cooperation in law enforcement
    3. It underscores Guyana’s commitment to assisting in the pursuit of justice across borders

The successful extradition of Rajkumar after years on the run sends a strong message about the long reach of the law and the persistence of law enforcement agencies in bringing fugitives to justice.
