A habitual offender from the Essequibo Coast has been sentenced to ninety days in prison after admitting to threatening a fellow villager, marking his second jail term this year.
Moniram Singh, 50, of Westbury, Essequibo Coast, appeared on Tuesday before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court. Singh pleaded guilty to the charge of threatening behaviour against Jennifer Ramcharran, a 50-year-old housewife from the same village. The incident took place last Friday and was swiftly brought before the court, where a prompt guilty plea led to his immediate sentencing.
Court records show that Singh has a history of run-ins with the law. Just months earlier, in March, he was convicted of theft involving a cellphone and sentenced to six months in jail. His latest conviction underlines ongoing concerns about recidivism and community safety in the area.
Residents expressed mixed feelings about Singh’s imprisonment—relieved at the prospect of increased safety, yet concerned about recurring anti-social behaviour. Local authorities are urging community members to report threats and violence promptly, emphasizing the judiciary’s commitment to protecting victims and maintaining public order.
As Singh begins his three-month sentence, authorities reaffirm ongoing efforts to address the root causes of repeated offending and to support victims of intimidation and crime on the Essequibo Coast.
