Durban St Man Remanded in Custody Following Armed Robbery Arrest

    Published on

A Durban man has been remanded in custody after being apprehended in connection with an armed robbery that left a local business manager shaken and sparked a dramatic police pursuit through the city.

The incident unfolded on June 21 in Doonside, when a business manager returning from the bank was accosted by three armed men at the gate of his premises. The suspects, wielding firearms, robbed the victim of a bag containing personal belongings and a small sum of money. Notably, a larger amount of cash—recently withdrawn from the bank—was left untouched in the victim’s vehicle.

Law enforcement agencies responded swiftly. The ET Tactical Response Team, acting on circulated intelligence, tracked the suspects’ vehicle as it made its way toward Durban. Police intercepted the car at the corner of Broad Street and Victoria Embankment, where the suspects opened fire on officers, damaging a police vehicle and initiating a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended when the suspects’ vehicle crashed, prompting two of the three men to flee into a crowded area and evade immediate capture.

One suspect was arrested at the scene, and the victim’s stolen belongings were recovered. The detained individual, identified as a resident of Durban Street, has since appeared in court and been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings. Police have launched an intensive search for the two remaining suspects, with investigations ongoing to bring them to justice.

This latest incident underscores the ongoing challenge of armed robberies in Durban and the surrounding areas. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tackling violent crime, urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any information that could assist in the apprehension of the outstanding suspects.

The victim, though traumatised, escaped without serious physical injury. Community members and local business owners have expressed concern over the brazen nature of the attack, calling for heightened security measures and more visible policing in the area.

As the investigation continues, the case serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by business owners and the importance of coordinated law enforcement efforts in curbing violent crime.
