In a decisive operation, police in Berbice apprehended two men over the weekend after they were allegedly found in possession of cannabis, an unlicensed firearm, and ammunition.
According to reports, the arrests took place late Saturday night when law enforcement officials, acting on a tip-off, intercepted a silver Toyota motorcar along the Number 51 Village Public Road. The vehicle was occupied by two men, ages 29 and 34, both residents of the Corentyne area.
During a thorough search of the car, officers discovered a quantity of cannabis hidden beneath the back seat. Further inspection led to the recovery of a .32 calibre pistol and several rounds of matching ammunition concealed in a compartment of the vehicle.
Neither suspect was able to produce a firearm licence or provide a satisfactory explanation for the presence of the weapon and drugs. Both men were immediately taken into custody and transported to the Springlands Police Station for further questioning.
The suspects are expected to be charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition. Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the men are linked to any other criminal activity in the region.
The bust has been welcomed by local residents, who have voiced growing concerns about the prevalence of illegal weapons and drugs in Berbice. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on crime and have encouraged members of the public to continue sharing information that can assist in keeping communities safe.
The duo is slated to appear before the Springlands Magistrates’ Court later this week as the case proceeds.
