Daughter, Son-in-Law Charged with Murder of Jenny Mohamed

    Published on

The daughter and son-in-law of Jenny Mohamed, the Non Pareil woman whose disappearance and subsequent murder shocked the East Coast Demerara community, have been formally charged with her murder and remanded to prison.

Saffia Mohamed, 23, a housewife, and Austin Ramchand, 24, an auto electrician—both of Lot 304 Mon Repos—were arrested on June 16, 2025, following an intensive police investigation. The pair appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where they were read the charge of murder and subsequently remanded.

The case began as a missing person’s report after 46-year-old Jenny Mohamed, also known as “Baby,†was last seen at her Non Pareil home on June 10. Her body was discovered days later, wrapped in a garbage bag and tarpaulin and dumped in a trench along Eccles New Road, East Bank Demerara.

Investigators revealed that Jenny had recently asked her daughter and son-in-law, who had moved into her home, to leave. Police found bloodstains throughout the house, some of which appeared to have been cleaned. Forensic tests confirmed the presence of human blood, and further evidence—including a suspicious handwritten note and strands of hair—was collected for DNA analysis.

During questioning, Saffia Mohamed confessed to the murder, providing a detailed account of how she and her husband stabbed and strangled her mother with a rope. The confession led investigators to the location where Jenny’s body was recovered, bearing multiple stab wounds and a rope tied around her neck. Austin Ramchand also admitted to his involvement in both the killing and the disposal of the body.

Jenny’s husband remains in custody as the investigation continues. The case has sent shockwaves through the community, as authorities work to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
