    Published on

A boating accident on the Berbice River has claimed the life of a Cumberland woman, leaving her family and community in mourning. The tragic incident occurred on Friday, April 11, when the boat she was traveling in capsized near Ebini Landing.

The victim, identified as 50-year-old Veronica Persaud, was reportedly traveling with several other individuals when strong currents caused the vessel to overturn. Eyewitnesses stated that Persaud was thrown into the water and struggled to stay afloat. Despite immediate rescue attempts by those nearby, she was unable to be saved.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mishap. Initial reports suggest that the boat may have been overloaded or improperly equipped for navigating the challenging river conditions. Officials are also examining whether safety protocols were followed during the journey.

Persaud’s death has sent shockwaves through the Cumberland community, where she was known for her kindness and active involvement in local activities. Her grieving family is urging authorities to improve safety measures for river transportation to prevent similar tragedies.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about waterway safety in Guyana, particularly in rural areas where boats are a primary mode of transportation. The Berbice River has seen several accidents over the years, prompting calls for stricter regulations and better enforcement of safety standards.

As investigations continue, authorities have reminded boat operators and passengers to prioritize safety by adhering to guidelines and ensuring vessels are equipped with life jackets and other essential equipment. Persaud’s untimely passing serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with river travel and the need for vigilance to avoid further loss of life.
