Cuban Remanded Over Murder of Stepdaughter in Georgetown

    Published on

A Cuban national has been remanded to prison following the brutal murder of his 21-year-old stepdaughter in Georgetown, an incident that has shocked both the local and expatriate communities.

Wispriey Alfonso, 40, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was not required to plead to the capital charge. He is accused of murdering Davely Morales, a Cuban sales representative, during a violent attack at their rented apartment at Lot 56 Pike Street, Kitty, on May 23, 2025.

According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, the early morning attack unfolded when a tenant in the building heard screams coming from the apartment. The witness observed Alfonso standing over Morales’s mother, Milaysi Rodrigues, assaulting her with a chopper in the living room. Morales, already suffering multiple chop wounds, was found beside her mother in a pool of blood. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape the apartment but collapsed in the walkway outside.

Emergency services responded quickly, but Morales was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital. Her mother was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, suffering from several severe wounds.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Morales sustained multiple chop wounds to her hands, the back of her head, and her jaw, highlighting the extreme violence of the attack.

Following the incident, Alfonso fled the scene but later surrendered to police at the Kitty Police Station, reportedly still in possession of the blood-stained weapon used in the crime. He was immediately taken into custody and has since been remanded until his next court appearance scheduled for July 9, 2025, as investigations continue.

The family, who had arrived in Guyana from Cuba just a month prior, had been residing together in the Pike Street apartment. The motive behind the attack has not yet been disclosed by authorities.

The case has drawn significant attention and concern from the Cuban community in Guyana, as well as calls for continued vigilance and support for victims of domestic violence.
