In a swift and coordinated operation, law enforcement officers apprehended a speedboat passenger found in possession of a significant quantity of cocaine on Thursday afternoon. The bust, which unfolded along the busy Demerara River, has sent ripples through the local community and underscored the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region.

According to police reports, the operation began when officers, acting on intelligence, intercepted a speedboat making its way from Parika to Georgetown. The vessel was stopped near the Stabroek Market wharf, a known hub for riverine traffic.

A search of the passengers led to the discovery of a suspicious package concealed in the backpack of a 28-year-old male passenger. Upon inspection, the package was found to contain 875 grams of cocaine, tightly wrapped and ready for distribution.

The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further investigations, was immediately arrested and taken into custody. He is currently assisting police with their inquiries as authorities work to determine the source and intended destination of the illegal substance.

Senior officers praised the vigilance of the river patrol team, noting that the seizure represents a significant blow to drug traffickers operating along the waterways. “This operation demonstrates our commitment to disrupting the flow of illegal drugs and keeping our communities safe,†one officer stated.

The suspect is expected to be charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Meanwhile, police have intensified surveillance along key river routes, warning that further operations are underway to dismantle drug networks exploiting the region’s waterways.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging members of the public to report any suspicious activity and reaffirming their dedication to the fight against narcotics trafficking.
