A 24-year-old Victoria Village man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to the rape of a seven-year-old boy. The crime, which took place in 2021, has left the victim’s family traumatized and forced them to relocate to escape ongoing stigma and fear.
During the sentencing hearing, the boy’s mother tearfully described the profound impact of the assault, noting that her son remains withdrawn and continues to struggle with the emotional aftermath. The convicted man, Shemar Benn, also known by several nicknames, apologized to the court, expressing remorse for his actions.
Justice Damone Younge of the Demerara High Court initially considered an 18-year sentence but reduced it after taking into account mitigating factors such as Benn’s guilty plea and expressions of remorse. However, the judge added time due to aggravating circumstances, including the victim’s young age and the psychological harm caused. With a final deduction for his early admission of guilt, Benn was ultimately sentenced to 10 years behind bars.
The case has highlighted the urgent need for justice and protection for child victims of sexual violence in Guyana. The court emphasized that such crimes will be met with the full force of the law, sending a clear message about the seriousness with which these offences are viewed.
