Two men, a construction worker and a fisherman, appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday to answer to a series of serious charges, including armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.
The accused, 27-year-old Jamal Peters, a construction worker of Sophia, and 32-year-old Ryan Adams, a fisherman of West Ruimveldt, were jointly charged following a police investigation into a recent armed robbery that left a local shopkeeper traumatized.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on May 20th, when the duo allegedly stormed a small grocery shop in the La Penitence area. Brandishing a handgun, they reportedly demanded cash and valuables from the proprietor. The pair escaped with an undisclosed sum of money and several personal items before police responded to the scene.
Acting on information received, law enforcement officers apprehended Peters and Adams less than 24 hours later. During their arrest, officers recovered a .38 caliber revolver believed to have been used in the robbery, along with some of the stolen items.
In court, both men faced charges of robbery under arms and illegal possession of a firearm. They were not required to enter a plea, as the charges are indictable. The prosecution objected to bail, citing the gravity of the offenses and the risk of flight.
Magistrate Alisha George remanded the accused to prison until their next court appearance, scheduled for June 10th. The case has drawn attention to the growing concerns over armed robberies in the city and the need for continued vigilance by both law enforcement and the public.
Investigations are ongoing as police work to determine whether the men are linked to other recent robberies in the area.
