In a significant victory against international drug trafficking, the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) apprehended two foreign nationals—a Colombian and a Venezuelan—on Friday, April 11, after they were found in possession of over 5 kilograms (approximately 12 pounds) of cocaine. The operation took place on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, following a tip-off that led to the swift action by CANU officers.
The suspects were intercepted during a targeted search operation, which revealed the concealed narcotics. Preliminary investigations confirmed that the seized cocaine weighed 5.536 kilograms. Both individuals are currently in custody as authorities continue their investigation into the origins and intended destination of the drugs.
This bust highlights CANU’s ongoing efforts to combat the pervasive drug trade in Guyana, which often serves as a transit hub for narcotics destined for international markets. The agency has been stepping up its operations in recent years, with notable successes in seizing large quantities of illicit substances.
In a related development, CANU agents conducted another operation on Thursday at Bakershop Dam #75 Village in Corentyne, Berbice. This raid uncovered 100 kilograms of marijuana at a residential property, leading to the detention of two additional suspects who are assisting with investigations.
The arrests underscore the increasing involvement of foreign nationals in drug trafficking activities within Guyana. Authorities have emphasized the need for enhanced international cooperation to dismantle transnational drug networks.
CANU’s recent achievements form part of a broader crackdown on narcotics. In 2024 alone, the agency seized over 6,000 kilograms of illegal drugs, including 5,094 kilograms of cocaine valued at approximately $195 million on the international market. These efforts reflect Guyana’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking and ensuring regional security.
