The usually bustling streets of East La Penitence were rocked on Thursday night when a confrontation between two acquaintances ended in tragedy. Datson Davidson, a 54-year-old clothes vendor known locally as “Blackie,” was shot dead following an argument with a shopkeeper at the corner of Cocorite and Freeman Streets.

The incident occurred around 8:45 pm, drawing immediate attention from residents and passersby. According to initial police investigations, Davidson and the alleged shooter, 33-year-old shopkeeper Colwin Mercurius, were engaged in a heated dispute moments before a gunshot rang out. Witnesses reported seeing Davidson collapse a short distance from the scene.

Emergency Medical Technicians arrived promptly but could only pronounce Davidson dead at the scene. Crime scene investigators recovered a 9mm pistol, a live round, and a spent shell, all believed to be linked to the fatal shooting.

Mercurius was swiftly arrested and is now in police custody as investigations continue. The suspect’s arrest has reignited public concern due to his extensive criminal history, particularly involving illegal firearms. Over the past decade, Mercurius has faced multiple charges related to unlicensed weapons and ammunition, with previous cases in 2011, 2019, and 2021. Despite these arrests, he had been released on bail or acquitted in each instance.

The murder of Davidson has sent shockwaves through the Albouystown and East La Penitence communities, with many calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the slain vendor.
