Charge Upgraded to Murder in Jeremiah Gustave Case

    Published on

The tragic shooting of seven-year-old Jeremiah Gustave has taken a significant turn, as the accused, Odel Garnette, also known as “Crab,†now faces a murder charge following the child’s death after a months-long battle for survival.

The incident dates back to July 9, 2024, when Jeremiah was struck in the head by a stray bullet while sitting at his mother’s food stall on Charles Street, Charlestown. The shooting occurred during a reported crossfire between two individuals. Jeremiah, a student of Smith’s Memorial Primary, was only six years old at the time. He endured eight months in a coma and underwent multiple surgeries before succumbing to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital on March 29, 2025.

Initially, Garnette was charged with attempted murder and had been on remand since October 2024. However, following Jeremiah’s death, the charge was formally upgraded to murder during a court appearance before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty. The previous attempted murder charge has been set aside, and Garnette is scheduled to return to court on May 27 as the prosecution pursues the new indictment.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with Jeremiah’s family and community members demanding justice and accountability. The child’s mother, Keisha Gustave, continues to call for full justice, especially after charges were previously withdrawn against a second suspect in the case.

Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn has also emphasized the need for an impartial investigation, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and due process as the matter proceeds through the judicial system.

Jeremiah’s death has left a deep void in his family and community. His story has become a rallying point in the ongoing conversation about gun violence and the urgent need for safer communities in Guyana. As the case moves forward in court, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice in the memory of a young life cut tragically short.
