Essequibo Coast, Guyana — An 18-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in a devastating accident on the Mainstay access road in Region Two late Tuesday night, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the area.
The victim, identified as Uwayne Freeman of Mainstay, was riding his motorcycle with fellow 18-year-old Alexander Gomes as a pillion passenger. According to police reports, Freeman was traveling at a high speed when he lost control of the bike, resulting in a collision with a utility pole.
Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting both young men to the Suddie Public Hospital. While Gomes was treated for a fractured right foot, Freeman was pronounced dead on arrival by hospital staff. His body has been transferred to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed was a contributing factor, though officials are continuing to gather evidence and witness statements.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of fatal motorcycle accidents in the Essequibo region, raising urgent questions about road safety, speeding, and the need for increased public awareness. Local officials and community members have expressed condolences to the families affected and are urging all road users to exercise caution, especially on rural and less illuminated roads.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of another young life and looks for solutions to prevent further tragedies on Guyana’s roads.
