The Bartica Magistrate’s Court has acquitted local businessman Vivendra Balgobin, who was previously charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident at Paradise Night Club last August.
Balgobin, 46, was initially arrested after a confrontation at the popular nightclub escalated into violence. According to police reports, the altercation began when a friend of Balgobin accidentally struck the table where Conroy Cox, known as “Pink Boy,†and 18-year-old Lavella Douglas were seated, causing bottles to fall and alcohol to spill. This led to a heated exchange between Balgobin and Cox, during which Cox allegedly threw a liquid substance in Balgobin’s face and assaulted him.
The situation intensified when Cox left the club, only to return shortly after in his vehicle. Witnesses stated that Cox continued to verbally abuse Balgobin before exiting his car. At this point, Balgobin drew his licensed Glock 45 firearm and discharged several rounds, striking Cox three times in the abdomen. Douglas was also injured during the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to her right hand.
Both victims were rushed to the Bartica Hospital. Cox was listed in critical condition, while Douglas was reported to be stable. Police recovered two 9mm spent shells at the scene and promptly seized Balgobin’s firearm.
Balgobin was charged with attempted murder and remanded to prison, but was later released on $800,000 bail with the condition that he surrender his passport. The case drew significant public attention, raising questions about the issuance of firearm licenses and the responsibilities of gun owners.
After months of legal proceedings, the court found insufficient evidence to convict Balgobin and ruled in his favor, effectively clearing him of all charges related to the shooting. The verdict has sparked renewed debate in the community about conflict resolution and the use of firearms in public spaces.
As the dust settles, the incident remains a stark reminder of the potential consequences when disputes turn violent, and the importance of responsible gun ownership in Guyana.
