A 42-year-old gold miner from Awarewaunau Village, Deep South Rupununi, has been granted bail after being charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. Romuald Sam appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where he was granted bail in the sum of $50,000.
Sam was arrested on April 30 at Marudi Backdam following allegations that he assaulted a female in South Rupununi. When the charge was initially read, Sam was not required to plead, as it was indictable. However, under the Administration of Justice Act, the matter was allowed to proceed summarily, and Sam pleaded not guilty when the charge was re-read.
As part of his bail conditions, Sam must report to the Aishalton Police Station every Friday at 10:00 a.m. until the matter is concluded. He is also required to keep the peace and refrain from contacting any of the witnesses involved in the case.
The victim was present in court during the proceedings. The case has been adjourned to May 14, 2025, when the trial is set to commence.
