Corentyne, Berbice – A brazen armed robbery unfolded Tuesday evening at the Golden Spring Supermarket in Number 65 Village, Corentyne, when four masked bandits stormed the Chinese-owned business, targeting both the owner and several customers.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. as the assailants, armed with firearms, confronted customers arriving to shop, forcibly taking cash, jewelry, and personal items. Two customers, Shevnarine Richard and Haresh Persaud, were robbed of cash, mobile phones, and gold jewelry before three of the bandits entered the supermarket, while one remained outside to control the situation.
Inside, the robbers ordered customers and the cashier to lie on the ground, firing several shots outside during the chaos. The bandits then seized an undisclosed sum of cash and valuables from the owner and patrons. In their escape, they commandeered Persaud’s recently purchased car, which was later recovered abandoned in a nearby village after a search by the victim and police.
In total, seven people-including the supermarket owner-were robbed. Police responded within minutes and have since arrested three individuals for questioning, including a customer present during the incident. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring them to justice.
