A man accused of domestic abuse has been granted bail in the sum of $110,000 following a court appearance this week, after spending several days on remand.

The accused, 34-year-old Mark Peters of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Alicia George at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. Peters faces charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, stemming from an incident involving his reputed wife earlier this month.

According to the prosecution, Peters allegedly assaulted his partner during a heated argument at their home on June 14. The victim reportedly sustained visible injuries and subsequently filed a police complaint, leading to Peters’ arrest and initial remand.

During Thursday’s proceedings, the prosecution objected to bail, citing concerns for the victim’s safety and the possibility of witness tampering. However, defence attorney Priya Singh argued that Peters had no prior convictions, was gainfully employed, and had strong community ties. Singh further assured the court that Peters would comply with any conditions set by the court to ensure the victim’s protection.

After considering submissions from both sides, Magistrate George granted bail in the amount of $110,000, with strict conditions attached. Peters was ordered to have no contact with the complainant and to report to the nearest police station every Friday until the case is concluded.

The matter has been adjourned to July 10, when the court is expected to hear further evidence. The case continues to attract public attention as concerns about domestic violence remain high in the community.
