Acid Attack on Pupils and Teachers: Perpetrators Could Face Terrorism Charges, Says Attorney General

    Published on

In the wake of a shocking acid attack on three students and two teachers from Chateau Margot Primary School, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall has announced that those responsible could be prosecuted under terrorism laws.

The incident occurred on Monday as the victims were walking home. According to reports, two men on a motorcycle approached and hurled a corrosive substance at the group, resulting in injuries to their faces and other parts of their bodies. The victims were rushed to hospital, where they received immediate medical attention and support from Education Minister Priya Manickchand.

Attorney General Nandlall, speaking on his weekly programme, described the attack as a “dastardly act” and stated that the appropriate charge for such an offence is terrorism, as provided for under Section 309 (A) of the Criminal Law Offences Act. He emphasized that if a death had occurred as a result of the attack, those found guilty would face the death penalty. In cases where there is no loss of life, the law stipulates a minimum fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for no less than 10 years and up to 15 years.

Nandlall further clarified that the law covers not only those who directly commit such acts, but also anyone who conspires, aids, abets, incites, or knowingly facilitates the commission of a terrorist act. All such individuals can be prosecuted as if they were the principal offenders.

The Guyana Police Force has launched a full investigation into the incident, with authorities vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice. The government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Childcare and Protection Agency, has committed to providing ongoing medical care and trauma-focused counseling for the victims and their families.

The acid attack has drawn widespread condemnation from officials and the public alike, with renewed calls for schools and their environs to remain safe spaces for learning. The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and educators, and to pursuing all necessary measures to prevent such violence in the future.
