43 Remanded on Terrorism Charges Following Wave of Public Terror in Guyana

    Published on

In a sweeping crackdown on public disorder, Guyanese authorities have remanded 43 individuals on terrorism charges following a series of violent incidents that rocked the nation earlier this week. The arrests come after a night of chaos that saw widespread looting, arson, and attacks on both public and private property across several communities.

Police launched a coordinated operation late Monday and into Tuesday morning, targeting those believed to have incited or participated in the unrest. The disturbances included the setting of fires on major roadways, the destruction of property, and the looting of businesses, particularly in areas such as Cemetery Road, Hunter Street, Sussex Street, Hill Street, and Durban Backlands.

Among those charged are individuals accused of deliberately igniting debris and other materials to block traffic and instill fear in the public. Viral videos circulating on social media captured thick plumes of smoke and road obstructions in some of Georgetown’s busiest corridors, further fueling public anxiety.

Authorities have also linked several of the accused to break-ins at local businesses. In one notable incident, a group allegedly raided a Chinese-operated supermarket, making off with approximately $6 million in goods, including groceries, phone cards, alcohol, and hardware supplies. Additional charges of break and enter, as well as larceny, have been brought against some suspects in connection with this and other burglaries.

The Guyana Police Force has emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing, with officers continuing to review video footage, images, and other evidence to identify further suspects. Police officials stated that anyone found to have participated in or incited the violence will be arrested and charged accordingly. Those caught on camera acting violently are also expected to be placed on a no-fly list as part of tightened security measures.

In court proceedings, the prosecution strongly objected to bail for the accused, citing the gravity of the offences and the ongoing threat to public safety. Magistrates have ordered all defendants to remain in custody pending further hearings later this month.

The government has condemned the acts as domestic terrorism and pledged to restore order and ensure the safety of all citizens. As investigations continue, authorities warn that more arrests may follow, underscoring their commitment to holding all perpetrators accountable for the recent wave of terror that unsettled the nation.
