Authorities at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) made a significant drug bust this week, seizing 36 pounds of cannabis concealed in barrels shipped from the United States.
The operation, led by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), was intelligence-driven. Acting on specific information, officers searched two incoming barrels at the Laparkan Cargo Shed, uncovering several transparent parcels filled with foreign cannabis. The seized marijuana, weighing approximately 16.4 kilograms, was promptly transported to CANU Headquarters for further processing.
The investigation did not end at the airport. CANU officers followed up with a search at a residence in North East La Penitence, Georgetown. There, they discovered a black garbage bag containing numerous packets of foreign zip-lock bags, small plastic containers commonly used for packaging cannabis, and rolling papers. These items were confiscated as part of the ongoing probe.
Two individuals are currently in custody, assisting authorities as investigations continue. This latest seizure highlights the persistent efforts of Guyanese law enforcement to intercept illegal drugs at the country’s main port of entry and disrupt the networks behind transnational drug trafficking.
