President Ali: Fashion Industry Key to Guyana’s Tourism and Economic Expansion

    Published on

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has positioned Guyana’s burgeoning fashion industry as a strategic driver for both tourism and economic growth, highlighting its potential to place the country on the global creative map and diversify its economic base.

Speaking at recent national events, President Ali emphasized that the creative sectors-including fashion, hospitality, and tourism-are integral to Guyana’s long-term development strategy. He pointed to the government’s significant investment in the sector, with over $2.6 billion allocated in 2024 and a further $3.6 billion in the 2025 National Budget to support initiatives like the ORIGINS Guyana Fashion Festival. This festival, a visionary project under President Ali’s leadership, aims to showcase Guyanese designers, models, and artists on a global platform, celebrating the country’s rich heritage and creative talent.

President Ali’s administration views the fashion industry as a catalyst for attracting international visitors and investors. The government’s broader tourism strategy includes the construction of world-class hotels and resorts, partnerships with international brands, and the integration of Guyana’s unique culture and natural beauty into tourism offerings. These efforts are designed to elevate the country’s profile, increase tourist arrivals, and stimulate local entrepreneurship.

Tourism Minister Oneidge Walrond echoed this vision, describing the fashion industry as a “force in creativity and culture” and underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering world-class events that give local creatives a global stage. Activities such as seminars, workshops, and training sessions are being rolled out to nurture emerging designers and ensure the industry’s sustainable growth.

President Ali has also called on the local private sector to invest in tourism and creative industries, describing tourism as a “low-hanging fruit” poised for dramatic takeoff. By aligning investment with development goals, Guyana aims to leverage its cultural assets-including fashion-to drive economic transformation, create jobs, and foster national pride.

With the ORIGINS Guyana Fashion Festival and other creative initiatives, Guyana is signaling to the world that its fashion industry is ready to shine, serving as both a cultural ambassador and a powerful engine for economic progress.
