President Ali Unveils Comprehensive Strategy to Ensure Food Security Amid Global Challenges

In a bid to establish a sustainable and resilient food production system, the government of Guyana is making substantial investments in various sectors, including agro-processing, hydroponics, and advanced agricultural technologies. President Dr. Irfaan Ali emphasized that these initiatives are part of a larger strategy aimed at safeguarding the nation against potential global food shortages and economic shocks.

During his address, President Ali underscored the significance of these investments, stating, “These efforts are not merely about creating local opportunities; they are also responses to international challenges.†With anticipated disruptions in global food commodity supplies, he highlighted the urgency of strengthening Guyana’s food production capabilities to withstand external crises.

“There is a very high likelihood that grains and key food commodities may experience varying degrees of disruption this year and into the next,†President Ali warned. “This situation could significantly impact production supply, especially as global demand for food continues to rise.â€

To mitigate these risks, the President affirmed the necessity of building a robust local food production chain that is both sustainable and resilient. “We must ensure that our agricultural systems are capable of weathering these shocks in the future,†he added.

For the past four years, the Guyanese government has focused on encouraging youth participation in the agricultural sector through targeted investments. “This is why we are heavily investing in agro-processing and hydroponics, leveraging science and technology to engage young people,†President Ali stated.

In the latest national budget, a record allocation of $104.6 billion has been designated for the agricultural sector, reflecting a commitment to instilling confidence among farmers and industry stakeholders. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha noted that this significant funding aims to transform the agricultural landscape through innovative programs, particularly those designed to involve more women and youth.

Minister Mustapha highlighted several initiatives, including the cut-rose project, which specifically supports single-parent households, particularly women. Additionally, an ambitious poultry program has been introduced to provide direct income opportunities for women. For the youth, the agricultural and innovation entrepreneurship program targets graduates from the University of Guyana and the Guyana School of Agriculture.

This program has already resulted in the construction of over 600 shade houses nationwide, facilitating the production of a variety of high-value crops intended for both local and regional markets.
