Women’s Inter-County T20: Berbice Cruise to Victory Against Essequibo

    Published on

Berbice Women delivered a commanding performance on Monday, defeating Essequibo by 86 runs in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Senior Women’s Inter-County T20 Tournament at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Ground.

Batting first after Essequibo won the toss and opted to field, Berbice recovered from early setbacks to post an imposing total of 149-8 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a brilliant knock from Realeanna Grimmond, who scored a fluent 61 off 51 balls, including five fours and two sixes. She was well-supported by Sheneta Grimmond, who contributed a quickfire 30 off just 17 deliveries, striking five boundaries.

Essequibo’s bowlers initially made inroads during the powerplay, with Tremaine Marks (2-17) and Kumarie Persaud (2-20) leading the attack. However, the partnership between the Grimmonds helped Berbice regain control and set a challenging target.

In response, Essequibo faltered under pressure and were bowled out for just 63 runs in 16.4 overs. None of their batters managed to settle at the crease, with Kumarie Persaud (14) and Varuni Pitamber (10) being the only players to reach double figures.

Berbice’s bowlers delivered a clinical display, led by Sherika Campbelle, who claimed impressive figures of 3-12 from her four overs, including a maiden. Plaffiana Millington (2-6) and Tiea Isaacs (2-8) also played pivotal roles in dismantling Essequibo’s batting lineup.

This victory puts Berbice in a strong position heading into their final match against Demerara on Tuesday. A win will secure them the championship title, while a loss could bring net run rate into play to decide the winner as all three teams would have one win and one loss each.

The tournament serves as a platform for selecting Guyana’s team for the upcoming Cricket West Indies Women’s T20 Blaze, scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 12 in St. Vincent. With performances like these, Berbice players have made a strong case for inclusion in the national squad.
