    Published on

Guyana’s junior hockey teams have made a strong impression at the Pan American Junior Hockey Challenge, securing crucial wins in their opening matches. The tournament, held at the Wildey Facility in Barbados, saw both the men’s and women’s teams from Guyana achieve victories against Guatemala.

    Women’s Team Performance

In the women’s division, Guyana dominated Guatemala with a convincing 4-0 win. Georgiana Fernandes led the charge with a goal in the ninth minute, followed by Kazaquah Uzzi doubling the lead in the 27th minute. Keitanna Percival also contributed to the scoreline, helping Guyana secure a decisive victory. However, in their subsequent match against Mexico, Guyana faced a tough loss, falling 0-6 to the more experienced Mexican team.

    Men’s Team Performance

The men’s team also started on a high note, defeating Guatemala 2-0. Both goals were scored by Jabari Lovell, who converted penalty corners to secure the win. The team’s head coach, Robert Fernandes, expressed satisfaction with the result but noted areas for improvement, particularly in matching the physical intensity of their opponents.

    Tournament Significance

The Pan American Junior Hockey Challenge serves as a regional qualifier for the Junior Pan American Games, scheduled for August in Asunción, Paraguay. The top two teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions will advance to this prestigious event. Guyana’s teams are sponsored by several local businesses and organizations, including the Ministry of Sport and the Guyana Olympic Association.

    Conclusion

Guyana’s winning start in the Pan American Junior Hockey Challenge highlights the potential of its young hockey talent. Despite facing challenges in subsequent matches, the initial victories demonstrate the team’s capabilities and set a positive tone for the rest of the tournament. As the competition progresses, Guyana will look to build on these successes and secure a spot in the Junior Pan American Games.
