Guyanese powerlifting standout Dominic Tyrrell is set to proudly represent his nation at the IPF World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships, taking place in Chemnitz, Germany, from June 8 to 15, 2025. Competing among the globe’s elite in the men’s 83kg category, Tyrrell will showcase his strength and skill on the international stage.
Tyrrell, who enters the competition ranked 9th out of 42 athletes in his weight class, has established himself as a formidable force in the sport. He will face top contenders such as Joseph Borenstein, Ade Omisakin, Jurins Kengamu, and Timothy Monigatti in Group A, with his session scheduled for 18:30 hours (German time). Powerlifting’s core disciplines—squat, bench press, and deadlift—will be the focus of the event, hosted by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), the sport’s leading global authority.
Boasting an impressive track record, Tyrrell recently secured a 4th-place finish at the Squat, Bench, and Deadlift Showdown in Montpellier, France, in April 2025, using the event as vital preparation for the world championships. His international acclaim surged following a stellar performance at the 2024 IPF World Men’s Classic Open Powerlifting Championships in Druskininkai, Lithuania, where he claimed a bronze medal in the deadlift with a remarkable lift of 342.5 kg (755 lbs). His total of 775 kg (1,709 lbs) across all lifts earned him a 6th-place finish overall in a field of top-tier international athletes.
Despite facing setbacks such as illness, injury, and personal loss during his preparation, Tyrrell remains optimistic and determined. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “Last year put me into the limelight, placed me in the top ten globally, and brought significant recognition, including being runner-up for Guyana’s Sportsman of the Year. I’m eager to continue building momentum and proudly represent Guyana on the world stage.”
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) and the broader Guyanese community have rallied behind Tyrrell, wishing him the utmost success as he competes for national pride and further cements his place among the world’s best powerlifters. Fans can follow his performance live via the official IPF broadcast.
