The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) has continued its Windball Cricket Championship, with three teams being eliminated in the latest round. The tournament, held at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, saw intense competition among participating schools.

In one of the key matches, Brickdam Secondary faced off against New Central High. Brickdam Secondary batted first, posting a competitive total of 86 runs for the loss of five wickets, thanks to Ravaldo Pereira’s impressive 47 runs and Prosper Jacobs’ contribution of 28 runs. Peter Khan was the standout bowler for New Central High, taking two wickets for 12 runs. However, New Central High struggled to chase the target, managing only 62 runs for four wickets, with Khan top-scoring with 30 runs. Brickdam Secondary’s Caleb Trotman sealed the win with two wickets for six runs.

In another match, St Rose’s High dominated Houston Secondary, restricting them to a mere 30 runs for four wickets. St Rose’s High then achieved the target without losing a wicket, with Joshua Sharma leading the charge with 24 runs.

The final match of the day saw St Stanislaus College face Tucville Secondary. St Stanislaus College set a modest target of 71 runs for one wicket, with Nitin Bhowandat and Ishan Haricharan contributing 28 and 20 runs, respectively. However, Tucville Secondary made quick work of the chase, reaching 74 runs in just 4.3 overs, thanks to Shan Raimoon’s blistering 44 runs.

The tournament continues with matches scheduled in different regions. On Thursday, schools from Canje/New Amsterdam competed in the Janet & Cheddi Jagan Memorial Tournament at the Rose Hall Estate Welfare Centre Ground. On Friday, schools from Corentyne will participate at the Johns Port Mourant Community Centre, and on Saturday, Region 3 will host matches at the National Track & Field Centre Tarmac.

These events highlight the vibrant sports culture in Guyana, with the Windball Cricket Championship serving as a platform for young talent to shine and for communities to come together in support of their local teams.
