Guyana’s top junior athletes Tianna Springer, Malachi Austin, and Athaleyha Hinckson are poised to defend their CARIFTA Games titles as the nation fields its largest-ever team at the prestigious regional athletics championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
Springer, the reigning U20 400m champion, Austin, who also clinched gold in the U20 400m last year, and Hinckson, the U17 100m gold medallist, are among 15 returning athletes from Guyana’s eight-medal-winning 2024 squad. Their stellar performances last year helped propel Guyana to a fourth-place finish overall, with the country earning four gold, three silver, and one bronze medal.
The 2025 CARIFTA Games, set for April 19-21 at the Haseley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, will see Guyana represented by a record 42 athletes. The team features a blend of experienced medalists and promising newcomers, all aiming to improve on last year’s medal haul and further elevate Guyana’s status in Caribbean athletics.
Springer, Austin, and Hinckson have been in top form during the lead-up to the games, excelling at national trials and intensive training camps designed to hone their skills and build team cohesion. Their readiness and determination have been widely praised by coaches and officials, who believe the trio’s experience and competitive edge will be crucial as they face strong regional rivals.
Hinckson, in particular, returns with added motivation after also securing a silver medal in the U17 200m last year. Both Springer and Austin are expected to anchor Guyana’s efforts in the 400m events, while Hinckson will look to repeat her sprint dominance.
The Athletics Association of Guyana and President Irfaan Ali have expressed full confidence in the team’s ability to deliver a strong showing, emphasizing the government’s support and the athletes’ dedication. As the CARIFTA Games get underway, all eyes will be on Springer, Austin, and Hinckson as they strive to retain their titles and inspire the next generation of Guyanese athletes.
