Guyana’s cricketing future will be on full display as wicketkeeper-batsman Kemol Savory and pace bowler Nial Smith have been named captain and vice-captain, respectively, of the Guyana Rainforest Rangers for the inaugural Cricket West Indies (CWI) Breakout T20 League. The tournament, designed to spotlight the Caribbean’s next generation of T20 stars, is set to bowl off on April 25 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Rainforest Rangers’ squad features a blend of experienced young campaigners and emerging talent, with the likes of Kevin Sinclair, Kevlon Anderson, Ronaldo Alimohamed, Ashmead Nedd, and Riyad Latif joining Savory and Smith in the lineup. The team also boasts promising players such as Rivaldo Clarke, Jediah Blades, Isai Thorne, Richie Looknauth, Zeynul Ramsammy, Adrian Sukhwa, and Quentin Sampson.
Under the guidance of head coach Ryan Hercules and his support staff, the Rangers have entered their final preparation phase, including intensive training sessions and match simulations at the Guyana National Stadium. The squad will depart for Trinidad on April 22, eager to make an impact in a league that serves as a prelude to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and a critical platform for players under 30 or those with limited professional T20 experience.
The Breakout T20 League will feature six teams—Guyana Rainforest Rangers, Barbados Pelicans, Jamaica Titans, Leeward Islands Thunder, Trinidad & Tobago Legions, and Windward Islands Infernos—competing in 17 matches from April 25 to May 10. Each franchise is closely affiliated with a CPL team, and the tournament is expected to be a proving ground for future regional and international stars.
The Rainforest Rangers open their campaign against the Windward Islands Infernos in the tournament’s curtain-raiser, aiming to set the tone for what promises to be an exciting and transformative event for West Indies cricket.
